All is Forgiven? Who says so?

I was out of town yesterday so I didn't know until I unwrapped my paper this morning: Parker Griffith has seen the light: he has decided that, despite his long record of support for liberal causes he is a conservative after all, and wishes to move to the Republican Party.

The Republican State Chairman quickly said, as quoted in The Huntsville Times, "All is forgiven."

For whom, exactly, is Mike Hubbard speaking? He is not a resident of the 5th District and Griffith does not represent him. It would seem that it would be incumbent upon those of us whom Griffith would represent if reelected to decide to forgive-- or not to forgive.

Hubbard in the same newspaper article says "It's almost like coming to your church and asking forgiveness for past sins. You don't turn them away. We'll forgive him for his sins."

But Mike is confused. His attempted analogy could hardly be more inept-- and I would add ridiculous. Politics and religion are as far apart as the stars are from the Earth. The Republican Party is not a religion, Parker Griffith is not an errant parishioner, and Mr. Hubbard is not the Pope. He has no authority to pronounce absolution on behalf of those of us who will be intimately affected by future political events.

Since the latter are just those who reside in the 5th Congressional District, I think it appropriate that the 5th District Committee convene to consider the matter. Accordingly I have just now petitioned Elbert Peters, our 5th District Chairman, to convene a meeting of the Committee to properly address this crucial issue. My communication to him is reproduced below.

I hope that recipients of this newsletter, whether on the Committee or not, will support this move.

Thank you for your loyalty to all that is good in the Country!

Hon. James Elbert Peters
Chairman, 5th District Republican Committee
Huntsville, Alabama
via E-mail

Dear Mr. Peters:

These are momentous times in the political life of America, and yesterday the raging intensity of the national political battle has been been brought to our very doorstep.

With our frightened longtime liberal Democrat congressman suddenly bailing out of his Marxist-oriented party, and declaring that, after all, despite his years-long liberal voting record, he is really a conservative, and that he wishes to run as a candidate under our Party's banner, I believe that discussion among the Members of the 5th District Republican Committee is urgently needed. Accordingly, I request that you convene, at the very first practicable moment, certainly some time before the first of the year, a special meeting of the Committee for such a discussion and appropriate action.

Further, I believe that such discussions should not exclude the subject of asking the State Committee to bar this individual from qualifying to run as a Republican.

With great respect,

Hugh McInnish
Member
5th Congressional District Committee
